Using Credit Cards Wisely

A credit card is a small plastic card that has been issued from a financial institution to the bearer of the card. The financial institution completes a credit check on the individual before issuing the card. By issuing the card, the institution is indicating that they trust that individual to pay back the balance charged on the card. The institution is establishing a line of credit with the individual for a certain limit. Credit cards always have a maximum limit on them depending on how much credit the individual requests and how much the financial institution is willing to lend them. Credit cards also carry a stated interest rate and a minimum monthly payment amount.

The use of credit cards can be quite useful. Some credit cards will reward the user with reward points or money. This is in essence money back for using the card. People have been known to make charges to their credit card to maximize the obtaining of these rewards. They know that they can pay back the balance on a monthly basis so instead of paying with cash, they pay with a credit card. This is smart financial management. For example, paying your tuition for your online degree with your credit card and then paying of the balance would be a smart idea.

With most credit cards if you pay off the balance on a monthly basis, you will not be charged interest. The smart use of credit cards then is to not charge more than you can afford to pay off, and to maintain a monthly zero balance. Anything more than this is just setting yourself up for trouble since the credit card interest rate is usually higher than other types of credit which can be obtained.
